ADDRESS Interview with Mark Aseltine of caliper.
Define your craft in 3 sentences or less. Creating architecturally inspired design, focused on making a spatial impact through wood centered furniture.
Describe your creative process. Every creative work begins with inspiration, communication and time. The process varies from piece to piece but prototyping is critical in the success of each composition.
Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? I look to architecture for inspiration. Great ideas and forms can be found through photographic documentation and exploration of the built world.
What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? Work hard and believe in what you do. Never forget your worth. Success is yours for the taking.
What’s your dream project? It would be a dream to be given full creative freedom to spend a year fitting out a cabin with all the custom wood fixings, by a client who trusts my skills. Nothing beats a client who believes in what you do.
What art and design trends are you excited about? I am very excited that we’ve seen a resurgence of craft and makers over the past decade. Interest in well made things is growing. This shift creates movement and opportunities; art and design communities that once flourished are making a comeback.
