ADDRESS Interview with Amanda Langerak of forage & BLOOM.

Define your craft in 3 sentences or less. Embracing the wild and the pretty I use home-grown, foraged and locally sourced flowers and plants in my work. I design for all occasions and love collaborating with my clients to bring them unique designs that are both simple and layered, whimsical and brash. I am all about the idea of being artfully undone.

Describe your creative process. I am inspired by the seasons and our environment. I love the juxtaposition of wildflowers beside hand-reared flowers, dried along-side fresh, and wish to bring my audience on a journey where they see new landscapes in my designs. For me growing my own flowers enables me to bring that extra detail into my work, such as seed pods, and flowers that are outside of the norm. I really value the moods that the seasons bring, as we move through winter to spring and summer to fall, and how the colours and textures I use so often reflect that.

Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? Getting outdoors is my saviour every time. Spending time with my dog walking in the woods and around my neighbourhood, as well as swimming in a lake or the ocean really clears my head. As soon as I am immersed in the flowers and foliage, it’s almost a meditative space whereby the flowers speak through me and I create, following their lead. This re-sets me every time. I often create something purely for my own joy before I can move on to anything else.

What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? I would say be patient with yourself. Don’t be afraid of being weird, as each of us has our own unique voice and expression. I think the way we see the world is our greatest gift. Stick with your dream, and don’t be afraid of it changing and being shaped in different ways then you may have expected. And mostly expect it to be very hard and extremely difficult at times, but so incredibly rewarding too.

What’s your dream project? This question is so hard to answer as I feel like I there is so much I wish to do, and have barely started on my journey as forage & BLOOM. I really get a kick out of editorial work, and would love to get to design for a high-fashion magazine. Flowers are such a transient medium to work with, so photoshoots are such a great way to immortalize design.

What design trends are you excited about? The way houseplants have been embraced, bringing the jungle indoors is very cool. Floral everything really makes my heart sing. I love how trends are continually being challenged by a desire for simplicity, relevancy and rawness all at the same time.
