ADDRESS Interview with ORIGINS Design & Fabrication Studio.
Define your craft in 3 sentences or less. ORIGINS is an experimental design and fabrication studio, operating at the intersection of traditional craft and technology. We operate at many scales, from furniture to built environment. We are agile; our multi-faceted approach to design and making gives us the ability to shift gears and disciplines quickly, focusing our attention on the projects and problems that really speak to us.
Describe your creative process. We try to approach each project as a problem. Our creative process then becomes an exercise in problem solving, through which we can leverage our internal design language and ‘toolkit’ to reach a unique solution. We place a huge emphasis on designing to reflect the manufacturing processes and tools that we have available to us. By considering these factors upfront, we find more opportunities than we do limitations.
Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? Our background is in architectural design, so we take a lot of inspiration from building form, material, and detailing.
What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? Don’t overthink ideas before testing them. Bring your ideas into the physical world as quickly as possible; even if it’s a disaster, you’ll learn way more from the process than you will from orbiting around your computer screen. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
What’s your dream project? Designing, building, finishing, and furnishing a small cabin in the Gulf Islands.
What design trends are you excited about? Anything that shifts our perception of products away from the temporary, replaceable, disposable mindset.
