ADDRESS Interview with Alexis Dodd of Steelwood Design.
Describe your creative process. When we receive an order. I meet with the client first to hear their ideas, get measurements and see the space. Next, I meet with Dad in the workshop. That’s where the idea morphs into a Steelwood Design. We go back and forth with a lot of “what if we….?”. Then we begin.
Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? I love seeing other makers creations. There is so much talent we can now view daily. Seeing someone in the workshop always gets the juices flowing again.
What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? Be patient and kind to yourself. It’s a hard and wonderful road. The ups and very low downs are part of it.
What’s your dream project? I’ve rewritten this question 6 times now – My dream is to make things people get excited about and want to have in their homes. And to be home by 3 for my kids.
What design trends are you excited about? Always the reuse, repurpose and reclaim. We love taking discarded steel and wood and giving them a fresh life.
