ADDRESS Interview with Alex Beim from Tangible Interaction.
Define your craft in 3 sentences or less. I create experiences that engage people in the here and now. My goal is always to get the audience to be present, to be playful and to feel curious. I like to spark that sense of wonder that is lost in so many of us.
The experiences I create run a wide range: from lighting for private homes and commercial spaces to art in public spaces, stage and light design for music bands, and also interactive products for marketing activations and performance groups like Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group. Whenever there is an opportunity to create a moment, build an experience and push the boundaries of what’s possible, I am thrilled to get involved.
Describe your creative process. Under the right circumstances, ideas happen like a spark in your head. Sometimes they show up as fully grown ideas and other times they are little seeds that you need to water and see them grow. Many times, talking through things and exchanging ideas is the best way.
Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? I find inspiration in everyday objects, textures, materials, processes, and in the moments I live and the moments I imagine living.
What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? Keep on experiencing, keep on making, keep on trying until you naturally find your place.
What’s your dream project? Any project is a dream project because having the opportunity to do what I do feels like a dream. However, I’d love to do a full exhibition at a gallery or museum space where we I could create a completely immersive, interactive experience.
What art / design trends are you excited about? I don’t really care about trends. I like to do what makes sense to me, regardless of trends.
