ADDRESS Interview with Willow & Stump.

Define your craft in 3 sentences or less. We (Bram & Kaly) co-founded Willow & Stump Furniture Design in April 2014 to explore furniture solutions for living in small spaces. Since then we have expanded our focus to create custom projects and new products for a variety of spaces while maintaining emphasis on function, usability and longevity. We work with a combination of wood technology and new materials to create designs that are modern and graceful.

Describe your creative process. We believe good design begins with research. We spend time understanding client/market needs and use it as a framework as we sketch and prototype. We often start prototyping quite quickly after idea inception and we tend to spend much of our product development time in this stage. We love being able to observe and manipulate the physical object we are making as opposed to relying on sketches and computer models.

Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? We are lucky that there are two of us! It’s pretty great to have another creative person to talk and ideate with when one of us gets stuck. When we both hit a wall we like to take a step back and find inspiration in our peers and nature. Nothing beats a hike to clear the mind!

What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? Do your research! Finding the right fit for your skillset and passions within the community you want to work in is so important to your success. It’s definitely a grind at first so be patient!

What’s your dream project? Working with textiles has been a dream of ours for a few years now, so we are extremely excited to be pairing up with Lemonni to launch a line of furniture that features her amazing patterns.

What art / design trends are you excited about? Geometric everything please! We’ve been really enjoying bold shapes and patterns lately. And of course, the rise of multifunctional furniture and products for small space living is what got us going in the first place!
