ADDRESS Interview with Janine Bouchard of L A S T L I G H T.
Define your craft in 3 sentences or less. 100% pure European linen bedding designed on the West Coast and made in Europe. I work with linen because of its simple beauty and inherent function creating every day items that last a lifetime.
Describe your creative process. The brand is based on four principles: timeless, sustainable, essential and natural…from there it starts with finding gorgeous textiles. I’m a bit of a textile nerd and travel to find great mills, then create samples and wash samples and have friends and family feel and comment and sleep on the linen. It’s not a speedy process.
Where do you find inspiration when experiencing a creative block? Getting out of Vancouver and traveling…100%. Vancouver sometimes lulls me into a winter sleep so I need to get out into the sunshine and be visually inspired. year round its exercise + being in nature + talking with friends who are creatives.
What advice would you give to young designers / makers / artists / creatives aspiring to make it in their field? Start somewhere and put in the time, be humble, be patient and master your craft.
What’s your dream project? Well I’ve just gotten started so to continue expanding what I’m doing now is a dream. I’d like to be working with the best designers, creatives and architects in Canada and to create a brand that lives beyond me and my life. In the short term, I’d love to be working with boutique hotels and expand the collection to textiles for the kitchen and bath.
What design trends are you excited about? Having beauty and artistic value in the every day items we use and making our homes a sanctuary…creating wellness.
